Obituary

Martin J. Sapiego, 96, of Exeter, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 in The Gardens at East Mountain Facility in Wilkes-Barre following a brief illness.

Born in Wyoming, he was the son of the late Alexander and Pauline Hyzenski Sapiego.

Prior to his retirement, Martin was employed by B.F. Goodrich Tire Company and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

He proudly served his country in the United States Armed Forces during World War II and the Korean War.

Martin was the kindest man you could ever meet.  He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother.  He enjoyed having the entire family over whenever possible.

He could often be found tinkering around in his garage.  His other interests including riding his tractor at his daughter Mel's home and spending time outdoors gardening.

In the evenings, Martin enjoyed watching tv with his wife Alberta, especially Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and Saturday nights were spent watching the polkas.

Martin will be sadly missed by his devoted wife and loving family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Zucosky.

Surviving are his loving wife, of 73 years, Alberta Brek Sapiego; children, Robert Sapiego and his wife, Sharon; Mary Lynn Cefalo and her husband, Fred; Melanie Sapiego and her significant other, Randy Burgess; 4 grandhildren, Katrina, Nicholas, Ashlee, and Freddie; 3 great grandchildren, Quentin, Claudia, and Theo; brothers, Eugene Sapiego, Wyoming; John Sapiego, Florida; sister, Marie Ambrose, Indian Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 28th at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, of St. Barbara's Parish, 224 Memorial St., Exeter.

Private interment for immediate family only will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Exeter.

Family and friends are invited to attend Martin's viewing which will be held Monday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of mass in the church.

The family kindly asks that flowers be omitted.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming.
