John Patrick Dunnigan, 94, of Jenkins Twp. and formerly of Pittston, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Hospice of the Scared Heart in Dunmore.
His beloved wife is the former Mary Ryan of Exeter, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage.
Born on June 4, 1931, in Pittston, John was the oldest of seven children born to the late Joseph and Frances Walsh Dunnigan.
John was a graduate of St. John's High School Class of 1949, Pittston and was a member of Corpus Christi Parish in Exeter.
After graduating, John, served a six-year enlistment in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was assigned to the destroyer USS Knapp (DD-653), which patroled the Korean coast with Task Force 77. He also served as an Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
Following his discharge, he pursued higher education at Temple University and subsequently secured a position with Verizon, where he remained until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, John Dunnigan; his grandson, Aaron Letlow; his brothers, Joseph, Robert, and Frank Dunnigan; and his sister, Sister Jane Frances Dunnigan, IHM.
Suriving in addition to his wife, Mary Dunnigan, are his children, Kathleen DiMaggio and her husband, Mike; Michele Giorgio and her husband, John; Matthew Dunnigan; Suzanne Wilson; and Eileen Dunnigan and her fiancé, Mike; eight grandchildren, Bryan Dunnigan, Kyleen Thomas and her husband, Ronald, John Giorgio and his wife, Melissa, Marissa Giambra and her husband, Joe, Maureen Thomas and her husband, Chad, Matthew Dunnigan and his wife, Lorie, and Michael DiMaggio; 7 great grandchildren, Brady, Liam and Saoirse Thomas, Lola, Lila and Emma Dunnigan, and Nicholas Giorgio.
John is also survived by his sister, Patricia Mullins; and his brother, Thomas Dunnigan and his wife, Joan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend John's Memorial Mass which will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Chuurch, of Corpus Christi Parish, 224 Memorial St., Exeter.
Private interment will follow in St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Exeter, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the BednarskiFuneral Home, 168 Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming.
The family has kindly requested that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 100 William St., Dunmore, PA 18510.
